1982-83 Senate Document #39 Revised PLANNING COUNCIL DOCUMENT #8 STATEMENT OF THE INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE'S ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AND TRACKS 1. The Institutional Development Committee reaffirms its responsibility established by 1982 Senate Document #2 (revision three), to give a first review to requests for authorization to plan new academic programs and tracks. 2. The Institutional Development Committee represents the University Planning Council in its academic program review function. 3. The Institutional Development Committee will review proposals with the University Planning Council for advice and comment. The recommendations of the IDC will be sent to the Senate. Rationale: The academic program (curriculum) of the University of North Carolina at Asheville is the product of the professional judgements of its scholars. These individuals have chosen, as a life's work, to revere knowledge and its acquisition, and, therefore, are entrusted with developing the intellectual substance of the University. New Programs of study and alternative approaches to existing disciplines will, logically, grow from the faculty involved. Programs may be proposed by other members of the University community, but must be subject to faculty review and approval prior to adoption. There are many tests an academic program must pass, the first and most challenging is a test of intellectual content. This test must be administered by the University's faculty.
