Senate Document #29 (APC Document #23) Biology Curriculum Revision Effective: Fall 1984 or Summer 1984, as indicated I. Change course credit in Biology 352 FROM 3 semester hours TO 4 hours (page 77, CATALOG). RATIONALE: As currenty taught, this course involves four lecture and five laboratory contact hours per week. The rigor of the course and the number of contact hours, comparable to four-hour offerings in the department, justify the elevation from three to four semester hours credit. (Proposal: J. McCoy) EFFECTIVE DATE: Fall semester, 1984. II. Delete description of Biology 444 on pages 77-78 of CATALOG. Substitute the following: 444 Biological Biochemistry (3) Survey of structure and function of biomolecules. Important biological processes discussed and illustrated by practice of current methods in biochemistry. Topics include isolation, charac- terization, enzyme kinetics, radioisotopes. Prerequisites: 131, 132, 133, 233; Chem 141, 142, 231. Counts only toward the biochemistry requirement of the major. RATIONALE: The revised description more accurately reflects course content. Also, the present description incorrectly implies that a laboratory is part of the course (it is, instead, Biology 411). (Proposal: G. Kormanik) EFFECTIVE DATE: Fall semester, 1984. III. Under Biology 411, Biochemistry Laboratory, delete Chemistry 221 as a prerequisite (page 77, CATALOG). RATIONALE: Our advising policy is to recommend strongly that students take Biol 411 to complement Biol 444 (B above). Chem 221, Modern Organic Chemical Laboratory I, is not required for Biol 444, so it is advisable to remove that Page 2 requirement from the prerequisite for 411. Chem 221, while desirable, is not absolutely essential as preparation for Biol 411. (Proposal: G. Kormanik and J. Perry) EFFECTIVE DATE: Fall semester, 1984. IV. Add Biology 132 to list of prerequisites for Biology 250, Dendrology (page 75, CATALOG). RATIONALE: Dendrology is required in the forestry track of UNCA's preforestry curriculum for transfer to the School of Forestry of North Carolina State University. NCSU now requires 8 hours of introductory biology in this track, which will be satisfied by our 131, 132, 133. Also, the content of 132 is important as background to 250. (Proposal: G. Miller) EFFECTIVE DATE: Summer 1984.
