Senate Document #28* (APC Document #22) Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree I. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND CURRICULUM (excerpt from "permission to establish" document for submission to general administration) A. Admission a) For beginning students through the normal channels for admission to the university. In cases where students have had considerable work at the high school level, a portfolio review may exempt certain introductory courses. b) for TRANSFER STUDENTS 1) Freshmen, sophomore - admission to the university through normal channels. Admission to the BFA program by declaration on major declaration form. Transfer evaluation will be done through faculty consultation and portfolio review. 2) Junior, senior - admission to the university through normal channels. Admission to the BFA program will be dependent upon a 3.0 GPA on transferred art courses, a faculty interview and a portfolio review. 3) Second Baccalaureate Degree - the S.B.D. candidate is considered a transfer and must satisfy the all-university requirements that are in effect when the student declares the second degree major. UNCA graduates with a BA degree may return and complete an additional number of hours to equal 72 hours. The 40 hours which make up the original BA will count toward the BFA degree. An art faculty committee in consultation with the candidate will determine what 40 hours of credit will apply to the new degree. Whether a reexamination (comprehensive exam) is necessary will be determined by the art faculty. The BA Senior Exhibition, however, will not satisfy the BFA show requirement and a new BFA show will be required. Page 2 2. Documents to be submitted for admission to the BFA program: a) In the case of freshmen (non-transfer) who wish to qualify for exemption from introductory courses, a portfolio which demonstrates their ability in the area they wish to exempt will be required. Exemption will only be allowed after a positive evaluation has been made on each portfolio submitted for each course wishing to be exempted (e.g., A student wishing to exempt Art 100 Basic Design will be required to submit a portfolio in which the major thrust is design). In some instances where a clear conclusion cannot be drawn from a portfolio, an interview with the faculty will be required. b) Freshmen and sophomore transfer students - Transfer credits, including course titles and number, course descriptions from catalogs of transferring institution, hours credit, and grade must be submitted through the registrar's office. In addition, a portfolio of samples of work from the above mentioned courses should be submitted for faculty evaluation if there is a question as to the appropriate course equivalent. c) Junior and senior transfer students - Transfer credits including course titles and number, course descriptions from catalog of transferring institution, hours credit and grades must be submitted through the registrar's office. In that juniors and seniors must transfer with at least a 3.0 GPA in art, the transferred documents (grades) must meet this requirement. The portfolio review is mandatory for juniors and seniors since they should in preparation for the required senior exhibition. The portfolio review will be made by the exhibition faculty. The exhibition faculty will pass their evaluation on to the student art advisor for proper placement within the program, and for transfer credits and evaluation. B. Degree Requirements: 1. The total hours required for the BFA degree will be 129-131 hours. 57 hours of studio, 15 hours of art history, 45-47 hours all-university requirements and 12 hours free elective credit outside the department will comprise the degree. 2. N/A (No graduate program) Page 2 3. The BFA degree will require a review of grades prior to the candidates entrance into the junior year (300-400 level courses). For a student to register for 300 & 400 level courses he must have a 3.0 GPA in the major. 4. The department will accept up to 42 hours of transferred art credit. The Senior Exhibition activity cannot be transferred. The last 30 hours must be taken in the department. 5. Exit requirements for the BFA: a) Senior Exhibition to be held in the Owen Gallery. This is a one-person show unless space and media (e.g., ceramics and painting) dictate a more appropriate double presentation. b) Documentation of the Senior Exhibit will be required. This may be done with slides, a written paper and/or video, or all of these methods may be incorporated into the documen- tation. This will be kept by the department. c) A comprehensive examination covering art history as well as studio procedures will also be part of the exit requirements. The Comprehensive Exam is an essay exam and slide identification. 6. There is no foreign language REQUIREMENT for the BFA, however, the BFA candidate will be encouraged to take a foreign language but may take the university option. 7. The BFA Degree must be completed within seven years. C. List existing courses and explain numbering system. Describe new courses. 1.
