Senate Document #25 (FWC Document #7 - 1982-83) RUTH & LEON FELDMAN PROFESSORSHIP FUND Each year the full-time, ranked faculty of UNC-A shall select two of its members for receipt of the Ruth and Leon Feldman Professorhip Fund prize. This award will honor those faculty who have excelled in one or both of the following fields: 1. Service to the community and to UNC-A; and, 2. Demonstrated competence in the areas of teaching, research and published writings. The selection of these two individuals shall be done in the following manner: I. Nomination The faculty shall be invited by the Senate to submit written and signed nominations by February 1 specifying the past accomplishments which recommend an individual's nomination. These nominations shall be in keeping with the terms of the Feldman fund. II. Review of Nominations Nominations shall be reviewed by the Ruth and Leon Feldman Professorship Fund Committee composed of six members drawn two each from the Faculty Welfare Committee, the University Research Council, and from the Distinguished Teacher Award Committee. The respective committee chairmen shall consult so that each of the broad academic areas is represented on the review committee. Members of the review committee shall elect their own chairmen and serve one year terms from January 1 to December 31. In making its decision, the review committee shall be free to consult with students, community people, or others who may assist the committee in making its decision. III. Announcement of the Award After its decision, which shall be kept confidential until the public announcement, the review committee, no later than May 1, shall inform the VCAA, who shall make Page 2 arrangements for announcing the award at the final spring faculty meeting. Recipients of the award will be listed in the UNC-A catalog in a section describing the Ruth & Leon Feldman Professorship Fund. Money from the Ruth and Leon Feldman Fund shall not be used to support the UNC-A Distinguished Teacher Award. RATIONALE: 1. The endowment fund permits more than two faculty to be honored, but in consideration of the size of the principal ($25,000) and the expected yield, it seems prudent to limit the recipients of the award to two. 2. The selection and announcement of the award shall be done in such a way as to honor the donor's name and intention. 3. Because the award is a modest amount, it should be granted in a tax free manner. Basic considerations, then, are to make the award for past achievement, to have it unsolicited, and to have the money disbursed without reference to future service as a condition for receiving the award.
