Senate Document #16 (APC Document #14) Management Curriculum Revisions II Effective as Indicated I. Page 142 Mgmt. 140 - Change title and course descriptions to: Mgmt. 180 Management Functions (3) An overview of management theory and practice. Designed solely for the non-management student. (No credit toward management or accounting degree.) Page 142 Mgmt. 200 - New description: A study of the external environment of private, public, and service organizations integrated with management theory and processes. Rationale: Mgmt 200 will be a Principles of Management course. It will be the first course to be taken in our department by Management majors. Up to this time we have not had a course which could be clearly identified as a principles course. To meet our professional responsibilities to our students such a course is necessary. Mgmt 180 has been redesigned to act as a service course for all students in the university. It allows any student in any major to take an introductory type course which will cover in a general manner the entire field of management, business, and the non-profit organizational sector of our economic system. At present there is no course in Management which allows non-management majors to be introduced to this vital part of society. In terms of precedent the following departments have introductory courses which are designed for non-majors and which do not carry credit towards their major: Physics 111, Chem 133, Atmos 105, Envl 131. The purpose of Mgmt 180 is to help students throughout the university make career choices which are based on an exposure to as many different interest areas as possible. To deny beginning students an opportunity to be exposed to such information is to seriously lessen our dedication to serving all our students. In the Page 2 proposed catalogue listing course Mgmt 180 will be clearly marked: "no credit for management majors." It is our intent as noted above that this course be a service course designed with the best interest of all the students in mind. Thank you for your consideration of this request for review. Effective: Fall 1984 II. To ADD to Accounting courses listing: "271-4, 371-4, 471-4 Special Topics in Accounting (1-4) Courses not included in the catalogue but for which there may be special needs. May be repeated for credit as often as permitted and as subject matter changes. Prerequisites: As indicated for the respective course." Rationale: Since Accounting courses are now listed separately in the catalogue it is desirable to permit special topics in Accounting. Effective: Immediately. III. Page 146 Mgmt 340 - New description: "A small group experiential format gives students an opportunity to practice team-building processes and to apply organizational behavior and general management concepts to the task of planning for their own professional developments."
