COLONIAL (3) The age of exploration, founding and early history of the first colonies; Social, economic, cultural, and political development of early America will be emphasized. b. DELETE - THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND THE NEW NATION (3) A concentration upon the causes and events of the Revolution, campaigns and battles, pamphlets, literature, the writing and ratification of the Constitution, and Washington's administration. c. ADD - (303) COLONIAL AND REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA (3) A history of early America from the age of discovery and exploration to the emergence of the new nation in 1787. The founding and early history of the colonies, causes and results of the Revolution, and the writing and ratification of the Constitution will be emphasized. RATIONALE: Two courses in early American history, colonial and Revolutionary, are combined into one. In a post- bicentennial and pre-apocalyptic America, there is less interest in early American history. The combination additionally allows the Department more scheduling flexibility while maintaining coverage in early American history. 2. CATALOG PAGE 130. ADD - HISTORY 353 - MODERN GERMANY (3) From Lutheran Reformation to the fall of Bismarck with emphasis on the rise of Prussia, pre-1914 society and politics to post-World War II Germany. Origins of World War I and the rise of Nazism will be underscored. RATIONALE: Developed as a special topics course, Modern Germany provides coverage of one of Europe's most important nations. The course was not offered before because the Department had no one available to teach it. Page 2 3. CATALOG PAGE 129. ADD - HISTORY 320 - HISTORY OF SCIENCE (3) A survey of the history of science from the earliest times to the twentieth century. Science will be approached as a cultural phenomenon, a set of attitudes toward the world of nature, a set of practices, and as a body of accumulated knowledge. A theme of the course will be the relationship between science and technology. RATIONALE: Developed as a new offering to emphasize the renewed interest in science and technology, the history of science is designed to examine the role of science and technology in its historical and cultural setting.
