Senate Document #4 FWC Document #1 (Revision of Senate Document #25 1982-83) Committee on Committees Revision WHEREAS, appointment of faculty to committees can affect faculty welfare, either by creating overloads, or by denying individuals opportunities to serve on significant committees; and WHEREAS, the Senate has expressed interest in securing greater knowledge of and contribution to the appointment process; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: 1. That the Faculty Welfare Committee assume the duties of a Committee on Committees; and 2. That proposals for faculty appointments to all standing University Committee originate with the Faculty Welfare Committee; and, 3. That in the appointment of ad hoc committees or task forces, the administration or others involved in creating committees will provide a suggested list of names to the Faculty Welfare Committee which will in turn evaluate the list against current assignments and will if necessary provide suggested alternatives. If circumstances prevent this process from occurring, the administration or others involved will in any case promptly provide the Welfare Committee with names of faculty appointed to ad hoc committees or task forces so that the Welfare Committee can continue to monitor the faculty workload. 4. That the Faculty Welfare Committee be empowered to review and recommend to the appropriate person a reduction in a faculty member's committee load so that mid-year appointments or elections to new committees or other special circumstances not unduly burden individual faculty members; and, 5. That the Faculty Welfare Committee make recommendations through the Senate to the Chancellor each Spring whether existing committees should be continued, combined, or eliminated; and, Page 2 6. That any objection by the Vice Chancellor to Faculty Welfare Committee proposals for appointments to committees be reviewed by the Welfare Committee and the Vice Chancellor with a view to resolving the differences.
