                        Biology Department Curriculum Revision







           I.  Senior Demonstration of Competency Extended to Two

               Course Sequence



               A.  Under:  Track A - Biology

                     IV.   Special department requirements - Biology

                           451 and 452 satisfy the demonstration of

                           competency requirement.



               B.  Course listing:



                   1.  Change 441 to 452 and change title to Research 

                       in Biology II.  Omit last sentence of description.

                       Add Biology 451 to the list of prerequisites.



                   2.  Add 451 Research in Biology I.  (1) Individual

                       research for students of senior standing. 

                       Literature and laboratory preparation for the

                       senior research project.  Departmental approval

                       of project required. (Grading:  S/U)





           Rationale:  Non-trivial biological research requires more than

                       one semester to complete the trip from idea to data.

                       Under the present scheme the senior project is done

                       with such severe time pressure that it is an ordeal

                       to be endured rather than a positive opportunity to

                       become involved in the workings of the discipline.
