The University of North Carolina at Asheville FACULTY SENATE May 12, 1982 The Faculty Senate met on Wednesday, May 12, at 10 a.m. in Library 1 with Dr. John Stevens, Chairman, presiding. Members present: Dr. Browning, Dr. Dorr, Dr. Gillum, Dr. Greenawalt, Dr. Howard, Dr. Moseley, Dr. Rainey, Mr. Wengrow, and alternates Dr. Shoaf and Mr. Bernhardt. Members absent: Drs. Grams, Rackham, Williams, and alternate Dr. Thurman. The minutes of the April 28 meeting were approved as received. A correction in the minutes of the last meeting was noted; that is, the memo referred to under New Business, page 3, had actually originated with Dr. Cochran instead of Vice Chancellor Dorr. The Senate next conducted two elections: I. Election of nominees for Faculty Conciliators to serve on the Student Grievance Committee. Under the rules of the grievance procedure, the Senate submits four nominees, and the Student Senate selects one member and one alternate from the list. The Senate Executive Committee presented the Senate with a list of six nominees from which four were to be selected. There being no nominations from the floor, the Senate elected the following nominees: John Bernhardt, Wilsonia Cherry, Peggy Downs, and Mike Ruiz. II. Election to the Research Council. The Faculty had submitted the names of the following people for Senate consideration: The Arts: Paul Sweeney, Josef Vandermeer Professional Programs: Gwen Henderson, Denise Hoyer, Charlie Reed Humanities: Phil Cranston, Jeff Rackham, Henry Stern, Ted Uldricks Mathematics & Sciences: Alan Comer, Robert Hoyer, Mike Ruiz, John Stevens Social Sciences: Willilam Haas, Margaret O'Donnell, Gene Rainey, Gene Schultz, Joe Sulock Page 2 The following members to the council were electeed on the first ballot: Paul Sweeney, Charlie Reed, Ted Uldricks, and Gene Rainey. A second ballot was necessary to elect for Mathematics and Sciences. The resullt of that ballot elected Alan Comer. Following the election, Merritt Moseley questioned whether Self Study statements on pp. 38 and 166 were correct in stating the Senate resolutions are enacteed unless the Chancellor specifically vetoes the measure. Moseley asked if the Senate Resolution concerning the rejection of transfer D grades had been implemented. The conclusion of the following discussion was the APC should quickly consider the Chancellor's objections to the Senate's actions concerning D's. With great relief, the Senate adjourned at 10:30 a.m. Jeanie M. Myers APPROVED Bruce Greenawalt Secretary, Faculty Senate
