           Members present:  Dr. Comer, Dr. Dorr, Dr. Farzanegan,

                             Dr. Friedenberg (alternate), Dr. Gillum,

                             Dr. Grams, Dr. Greenawalt, Dr. Howard,

                             Dr. Otti, Dr. Rackham, Dr. Ruiz, Dr.

                             Shoaf, Dr. Stern, Dr. Walker, Mr. Wengrow,

                             and Dr. Williams. 



           Members absent:   Dr. Squibb 



           Visitors:         Jo Cadle, Dr. Coyne and Dr. Ready

           The Faculty Senate met at 3:30 pm in Library I with Dr. Jeff

           Rackham, presiding.  Dr. Rackham called the meeting to order at

           3:30 pm.  The minutes of April 21 and April 28 were approved as

           distributed.



                              REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

                            ------------------------------



           1.  Dr. Rackham reported that Dr. Bares, representing Natural

           Science, and Dr. Maas representing Social Sciences, were elected

           to the Research Council.



           2.  Report of the Academic Policy Committee



               A.  APC DOCUMENT #29 - POLICY ON WITHDRAWALS.



                   Dr. Otti moved and Dr. Williams seconded that APC

                   Document #29 be approved.  Dr. Otti stated that this

                   policy shifts the approval for late withdrawals from the

                   Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs to the Director of

                   Enrollment Services.  After considerable discussion Dr.

                   Otti moved to amend the document and Dr. Williams

                   seconded.  The amendment should read "requires the

                   written permission of the instructor followed by the

                   signature of the student's advisor and approval of the

                   Director of Enrollment Services." The motion carried

                   with the amended change to APC Document #29.



               B.  APC DOCUMENT #35 - GPA REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHER

                                       CERTIFICATION.



                   Dr. Otti moved and Dr. Walker seconded that APC Document

                   #35 be approved.  The motion carried.







               C.  APC DOCUMENT #36 - EDUCATION MINOR WITHOUT

                                       CERTIFICATION.



                   Dr. Otti moved and Mr. Wengrow seconded that APC

                   Document #36 be approved.  Dr. Shoaf stated that Ed. 332

                   should read Foundations of Reading Instruction instead

                   of Foundation.  The motion carried with the editorial

                   change noted.



               D.  APC DOCUMENT #39 - MUSIC DEPARTMENT'S REQUEST FOR

                                       SPECIAL TOPICS OPTIONS AT THE

                                       300 & 400 LEVEL.



                   Dr. Oti moved and Dr. Grams seconded that APC Document

                   #39 be approved.  The motion carried.



               E.  APC DOCUMENT #40 - PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT'S

                                       REQUEST FOR COURSES.



                   Dr. Otti moved and Dr. Howard seconded that APC Document

                   #40 be approved.  The motion carried.



               F.  Other Business of APC.



                   Dr. Otti stated that if there were any other items that

                   needed to go through the APC please inform her.



           2.  Report of the Institutional Development Committee



               Dr. Comer stated that he did not have anything to report.



           3.  Report of Faculty Welfare Committee



               Dr. Greenawalt reported that further business from the

               committee could be presented in the Fall.  Additionally, he

               stated that the Welfare Committee had read the letter from

               President Friday and will report its contents to the Senate

               in September.
