Members absent: Dr. Greenawalt and Dr. Shoaf Visitors: J. Cadle, Dr. Bennett, Dr. Ready, J. Guilmartin, Dr. Perry. I. Dr. Stevens called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. He stated that the minutes of the Feb. 24th meeting were not available for approval and stated he would ask for approval of these minutes at the March 24 meeting. Dr. Stevens introduced Debbie Angel, who would be acting as alternate Faculty Senate Secretary due to Nayyir Bayan's absence on that day. He then stated that the purpose of this special called meeting was to decide on the action of IDC #5. Dr. Gillum opened the discussion by moving that the revised document dated March 4 be substituted for the original IDC Document #5. Dr. Howard seconded the motion. The motion passed. Dr. Howard then expressed concerns over the grading times requirements. Dr. Dorr stated the needs of the Registrar Office were that grades be submitted within 48 hours after the last exam was given. Jo Cadle of the Registrar's office reiterated these needs. Due to the many concerns and possible misunderstandings that might arise from maximum number of exams, responsibility of teachers in the classrooms during exam week, and length of time of the exams, the following amendments were brought before the Senate for approval. Page 2 1. Dr. Comer moved and Dr. Moseley seconded that Item 1 of the "Guidelines" in the original IDC Document #5 be added to the document. The item reads as follows: "The assigning of a comprehensive final examination is optional. However, each faculty person is expected to meet his class at the scheduled examination period." The motion carried. It was then moved by Dr. Rackham that to clarify wordings of new Item 6, the second sentence be amended to read as follows "However, each member of the faculty is expected to use the assigned period for appropriate educational activities. Dr. Comer seconded the motion. The amendment passed and became Item 6 of the Document. 2. Due to some concerns voiced over the length of time of the actual exam, Dr. Gillum moved that the exam time be changed from 2-l/2 hours to 2 hours. Dr. Grams seconded the motion. The motion was not carried by the Senate. 3. Dr. Browning moved, with Dr. Moseley seconding, that an additional item be added to the document to read as follows: "Faculty members may excuse graduating seniors from taking final exams during the last semester of their program." The motion was passed and will become Item 7 of the document. 4. In addition, Dr. Rackham also moved with Dr. Rainey seconding that another item be added to the document to read: "Infrequent evaluation is considered detrimental to learning. Hence, the final exam should not be the only criterion for a student's final grade." The motion carried and is to become Item 8 of the document. Dr. Stevens asked Mr. Guilmartin, President of the Student Government, what the feelings of the students were on the issue of final exams. Mr. Guilmartin stated that of those students surveyed, there was a 50-50 ratio on the issue. After more general discussion from the floor, Dr. Stevens asked for a vote on the document. The document was approved by a vote margin of 8-2 with several abstentions. II. Other Business Dr. Comer stated that the University Research Council was pleased to inform the Faculty Senate that six faculty members were awarded Intramural Faculty Fellowships from Chancellor Highsmith to support their scholarly activity. These fellowships will support the following five projects: Page 3 1. Ann Weber and Phyllis Otti One Year Together: A Longitudinal and Cross Sectional Study of Couples' Relationship Development, Maintenance, and Dissolution. 2. Charlie Reed - Completion of a manuscript for a major textbook in the field of young adult literature: "Using Young Adult Literature in the Classroom". 3. Arnold Wengrow - Preparation for publication of an acting edition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, a theatrical adaptation by Arnold Wengrow. 4. Leo Bares - Synthesis and Characterization of Bis-bibenzostibole. 5. Alan Comer - Purification and Analysis of Some Cell Wall Degrading Enzymes from Fusarium Oxysporum F. sp. Asparagi. Dr. Comer noted this is the first year that intramural funds have been available to the faculty and the University Research Council is gratified with this beginning and hopes that it will be continued in future years. Thirteen proposals were submitted for a total requested amount about three times the funds available, so he felt certain that there was faculty interest in the program. Dr. Comer, speaking for the University Research Council, then encouraged the Faculty Senate to thank the Chancellor for his willingness, even eagerness, to offer this assistance and to express its hope that it can be continued. Dr. Comer moved that the above become a resolution and the Senate unanimously approved. Respectfully submitted, Debbie Angel
