1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #45 APC DOCUMENT #30 Engineering's Request for Non-Credit Co-Op Courses Add the following courses: Engr 110 Co-op Work Period #1 (0 S.H.) Engr 210 Co-op Work Period #2 (0 S.H.) Engr 310 Co-op Work Period #3 (0 S.H.) DESCRIPTION: These courses are designed for students who wish to work full-time for local engineering companies. The students will maintain an official connection with UNCA by registering for these courses. RATIONALE: A program of cooperative education began in 1968-69 in the N.C. State University Engineering School. As part of the joint engineering program at UNCA, a UNCA engineering student may apply for the program. The optional program is planned such that the student may alternate semesters of study with semesters of work during the sophomore and junior academic levels. The freshman and senior years are spent on campus while the sophomore and junior academic levels are spread over a three-year period to permit the alternating of the academic semesters with practical work experience semesters. Students earn a salary while they are in industry, and may earn a sufficient income to finance most of their engineering education. The co-op plan normally requires five years for completion during which time the student receives approximately 18 months of practical experience. Students in all curricula in Engineering may participate if they have a grade-point average of 2.25 or better. After a student is accepted, he or she is expected to maintain at least a 2.00 grade-point average and be registered for each work period with the respective co-op course numbers for the corresponding work periods. Application for admission into the co-op program should be made early in the Fall semester of the freshman year; however, later applications resulting in fewer work semesters prior to graduation will be considered during the sophomore year or the first semester of the junior year.
