1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #44 APC DOCUMENT #34 POLICY ON ADMISSION The University of North Carolina at Asheville welcomes applications from all persons interested in post-secondary education and academic enrichment. To accomodate the diverse needs of the population served by UNC-Asheville five admission classifications have been established: beginning freshmen, transfer students, visiting students, post-baccalaureate students, and unclassified students. The requirements and procedures for admission to each of these classifications are explained below. These classifications, and the procedures for admission appropriate to each, apply to all students, whether full-time or part-time. Inquiries by mail, telephone, or in person are welcome at the Office of Admissions, The University of North Carolina at Asheville, P.O. Box 8467, University Heights, Asheville, N.C. 28814. Telephone (704) 258-6480. Requirements and Procedures BEGINNING FRESHMEN Admission to the University of North Carolina at Asheville is based on the applicant's demonstration of academic potential. Satisfactory potential is indicated by one of three means: 1. Student is in upper half of high school class rank and has completed with a minimum of a C average in each subject area the following college preparatory curriculum: English 4 units Algebra I, and Geometry or Algebra II 2 units Biology, Chemistry, or Physics 2 units 2. Student satisfies class rank or curricular requirements listed above and has a combined SAT score of 900-999. 3. Student scores 1,000 or above in combined SAT's. Page 2 In addition to the above three, students are encouraged to complete two units of foreign or classical language. It is the policy of the University to encourage equal opportunity, and applicants who do not meet the criteria may have their application reconsidered. Any applicant may obtain a review by requesting it in writing through the Admissions Office. All applicants for admission as Beginning Freshmen must submit: 1. A completed application for Admission. 2. An application fee of $15.00. This is a nonrefundable processing charge and does not apply to any other University fee. 3. An official high school transcript. This transcript should show all the applicant's high school studies through the sixth, seventh, and eighth semesters, and include class rank, if possible. After graduation, the applicant must provide a final high school transcript. 4. Official scores of Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). These scores are to be sent directly from the College Entrance Examination Board to the Office of Admissions of the University of North Carolina at Asheville (code number 5013). Information and application for the test are available from the College Entrance Examination Board, Box 592, Princeton, New Jersey 09540. 5. A completed Student Health Service Form signed by a physician. This form must be returned to University Health Services before the anticipated time of enrollment. Part- time students are not required to submit this form. Dormitory students and anyone using the University Student Health Services must have a copy of this form on file with UNCA. High school juniors may apply for early admission to the University in lieu of their senior year in high school. Such applicants must, in addition to the usual requirements for beginning freshmen, submit a written recommendation from the secondary school principal or counselor and have a personal interview with a representative of the Office of Admissions. The University's primary concern is that these applicants receive the secondary school diploma after successfully completing the freshman year of college. Page 3 TRANSFER STUDENTS 1. Students with 0-35 cumulative post-secondary hours, but not more than two semesters, attempted: a. May be automatically admitted if post-secondary transcript evaluation documents a minimum 2.0 GPA in 24-35 cumulative hours attempted. b. Must submit their high school transcript, post-secondary transcript(s) and SAT scores for evaluation on the same basis as entering freshmen. Post-secondary grades of C and better will be applied toward meeting the curricular requirements for admission. c. For curricular advising purposes, after admission all students will be required to take placement tests prior to registration unless specifically waived by the Admissions Office. 2. Students with 36 or more cumulative post-secondary hours, or more than two semesters, attempted must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 as computed by an UNCA Admissions Office transcript evaluation. 3. Students who do not meet the above criteria, but have substantial reason to believe they can successfully complete their degree at UNCA may request through the Admissions Office a review of their credentials by the Admissions Committee. The University will accept from other regionally accredited institutions courses for transfer credit provided that they are not incompatible with the University's programs and have been completed with a grade of C or better. Courses to satisfy the requirements of the major programs are to be judged individually. They should be generally equivalent in information and methodology to courses in the major. In cases of doubt, the chairman of the major department will determine the equivalence. Courses may be accepted as electives if they are not part of the All-University requirements or required for the major. Applied courses, whether technical or methodological (except in the Fine Arts), are not to be considered elective courses, unless they are directly related to the major. In case of doubt about direct relationship, the chairman of the major department will decide. Courses proposed for transfer credit are evaluated by the Admissions Office and in case of doubt, as mentioned above, by the chairman of the major department. This policy is to be applied only to those students who enroll for the first time at the university for Fall, 1984, and subsequently. Page 4 The University will accept up to 60 semester hours of transfer credit from an accredited two-year college. These credits will be evaluated in the same manner as those from a four-year institution except in the case of specific administrative agreements with two-year colleges. To receive a degree, transfer students must take the last 30 semester hours of course work and at least one-half of the requirements for the major in residence at the University. Applicants for admission as transfer students must submit all documents listed for beginning freshmen and an official transcript from each college or university attended including summer school. It is the applicants responsibility to request that each institution send the transcript directly to the Office of Admissions, the University of North Carolina at Asheville, PO Box 8467, Asheville, North Carolina 28814. Transfer students with 36 or more cumulative post-secondary hours are not required to submit their secondary school transcripts and scores of the scholastic aptitude test unless seeking review by Admissions Committee. VISITING STUDENTS Students from other colleges or universities may attend the University as visitors providing they are in good academic standing at the insitution they have been attending. A visiting student may register only upon presentation of a signed statement from the appropriate official of his or her institution specifically listing and approving the courses to be taken. Credit will be transferred to the sponsoring institution. Visiting enrollment does not constitute regular admission to the University of North Carolina at Asheville. An admission processing fee is not required of visiting students. UNCLASSIFIED STUDENTS Persons who wish to take college courses but have no clear intention of obtaining a degree may be admitted to the University as Unclassified Students. Unclassified Students may take up to eight credit hours each semester for credit. The usual University admissions requirements are waived for students in this classification and no application processing fee is required. Students who have applied for admission as regular degree seeking students and have been denied admission for reasons of academic deficiency, or previously enrolled students who have been dismissed, may not then be enrolled as Unclassified Page 5 Students. Admission as an unclassified student does not of itself constitute regular admission to the University. Unclassified students in good standing (2.0 grade average) have accumulated 24 semester hours of credit must submit a complete application with appropriate fee to the Admissions Office to register for additional courses. Non-degree students who wish to continue as unclassified students beyond 24 hours may apply for exemption to the Director of Enrollment Services. POST-BACCALAUREATE STUDENTS Some students who already hold baccalaureate degrees may wish to continue their studies at UNCA. Some may wish just to take a few courses. Some may wish to complete a second degree. Still others might wish to complete an additional major. Applicants holding baccalaureate degrees who wish to take undergraduate courses at the University of North Carolina at Asheville must submit an application form and present evidence to the Office of Admissions that they hold a baccalaureate or higher degree, documenting graduation and degree conferral dates. No application processing fee is required. Persons holding a baccalaureate degree who wish to pursue a second degree, or who wish to seek teacher certification, will be considered as Transfer Students (see information on Transfer Students). Baccalaureate degree holders who wish to meet the requirements for a post-baccalaureate major should submit an application fee of $15.00 and official transcripts of all previous college attendance.
