1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #42 APC DOCUMENT #38 MANAGEMENT'S REQUEST FOR A "NURSING MANAGEMENT OPTION" Add to the Management Department's program description under "Health Care Administration Track": "A Nursing Management option is also available in this track." Rationale: There are a large number of non-baccalaureate degree registered nurses (Diploma and Associate Degree Nurses) in the Asheville area. Many of these nurses have been promoted into Managerial/ Supervisory positions back lack the appropriate managerial training and skills to adequately fulfill their duties and responsibilities. In addition, there is a tremendous shortage of nurses who possess managerial training and skills who will be eligible for promotion to such positions. The Western North Carolina Task Force on Nursing Manpower also stated in their recently issued report, that there is a "lack of management training" for area nurses which has added to the Nursing Manpower problems of the area. The Department of Management has worked in conjunction with the areas major health care facilities' Nursing Directors in trying to rectify this situation. There is agreement that a major step in this direction would be the offering of a "Nursing Management Option" within the Department of Management's Health Care Administration Track. This option would be available to non-baccalaureate registered nurses and they would be subject to the University Requirements for a B.S. degree in Management. However, requirements of the Health Care Administration Track would be expanded to include two additional specialized courses for these individuals. These would be as follows: 1) The Core requirement, Management 140, the Managerial Environment that uses the text "Business and Society" would use a text emhasizing "Health Care and Society." Page 2 2) In the Health Care Administration track Management 322, "Health Services Human Resource Management" has been developed specifically for nurses because the management of the human element in the delivery of health care has such unique dimensions that a specific course designed to improve the human relations skills of health care managers seems clearly to be relevant to the Health Care management track.
