1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #41 APC DOCUMENT #37 MANAGEMENT'S REQUEST FOR CERTIFICATE IN HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION Add to the Management Department's program description: The "Certificate in Health Care Administration" would be awarded to those individuals enrolled in this program who successfully complete the following courses: 1. Mgmt. 140 - The Management Environment 2. C.Sci. 141 - Basic Computer Programming 3. Mgmt. 216 - Principles of Accounting (Managerial Accounting) 4. Mgmt. 200 - Philosophy and Concepts of Management 5. Comm. 269 - Communication for Management 6. Mgmt. 313 - Organization Theory and Behavior Rationale: This program is designed for individuals currently in a health care facility. A meeting was held on September 21, 1982 between representatives of the University's Administration, Management Department, and the area's Health Care community. This meeting was held as a result of numerous individual requests and concerns the past months. These concerns centered around two specific issues: 1) the need to provide an opportunity for many individuals to obtain basic management tools in order to carry out the responsibilities of their Managerial/Supervisory positions within the area's Health Care Community; 2) to provide an opportunity for the areas non-baccalaureate registered nurses to obtain specialized management/supervisory skills as an integral part of completing their baccalaureate degree requirements. Asheville is the Health Care Center for Western North Carolina. The health care industry is also the area's largest employer and is still undergoing tremendous growth. This has produced a need for providing appropriate managerial/supervisory tools for individuals who have been placed in managerial/supervisory positions in the area's hospitals, group practices, long-term care facilities and other related health care organizations. Many of these individuals already possess technical degrees and have been promoted due to their particular expertise. However, Page 2 they lack the appropriate managerial training and skills in order to effectively and efficiently carry out their overall administrative duties and responsibilities. Therefore, a request is being made to allow the Department of Management to offer a "Certificate in Health Care Administration" program. This program would be conducted through the enrollment of individuals into courses already offered through the University. This method would also enable those individuals who do not as yet possess a baccalaureate degree to apply the credit obtained through the successful completion of their courses toward a degree if they wish to continue their education beyond the "Certificate" level. "Successfully complete" is defined as at least a C grade in each course.
