1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #40 FWC DOCUMENT #4 SUMMER SCHOOL SALARIES The Faculty Welfare Committee urges the Senate to adopt the following statement on university policy for inclusion in the Faculty Handbook: The principle is hereby affirmed that in the calculation of summer school salary payments for instructional services, the pay should be proportionate to that in effect during the regular session, except that part-time instructors and others hired specifically for the Summer session may be paid at a per semester hour rate. Rationale: The Faculty Welfare Committee believes that by establishing this principle, the administration will have continuing encouragement to improve summer salaries for the faculty, and that by converting from our present system to one linked with the regular pay, continuing salary adjustments will prevent UNCA from occupying the low pay scale that has characterized Summer compensation for so many years. The Faculty Welfare Committee does not suggest what constitutes "proportionate pay." Such determination will need to be carefully studied by faculty and appropriate administrative officers. The scale should be reviewed on a regular basis by the appropriate administrative officers and by the Faculty Welfare Committee with the intent of insuring that salaries are maximized whenever possible.
