                       ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES LABORATORY COURSES







           Proposal:  Add optional one credit laboratory sections 

                      (ATMS 105.LI and ATMS 115.LI) to both ATMS 105,

                      "Introduction to Meterology" and ATMS 115,

                      "Introduction to Climatology".





           Rationale:  The addition of lab sections to these courses will

           give students a greater exposure to methods used in meteorology

           and climatology.  Whereas the lecture sections will introduce

           the basic concepts, the lab sections will give students a chance

           to work with actual data in applying these basic principles.

           The Intro. Meterology Lab will include instrumentation,

           observations, and analysis of weather maps.  The Intro.

           Climatology Lab will include some basic geography, climatic

           classification, identification of various climatic regions, and

           other uses of raw climatic data.  These labs will be supported

           by UNCA's Meteorology Lab, the campus Weather Station, and an

           extensive data collection in the library.



           Note:  This proposal to be in effect for the 1983-84 school

           year.
