1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #18 APC DOCUMENT #17 PROPOSED MINOR IN SECONDARY EDUCATION WITH CERTIFICATION Add: Students who complete all requirements in one of the secondary certification areas, or in the K-12 areas of art and theatre arts, will earn a minor in secondary education. RATIONALE: (1) The proposed minor in secondary education requires 16-19 hours in education (depending upon the specified certification area) above the introductory level, and ten hours in the related field of psychology. This generally meets the guidelines for a minor as delineated by January 1982 Senate Document #38. (Other minors, particularly the present Organic and Inorganic Chemistry minors have six to eight hours in related fields of Math and Physics.) (2) The proposed minor in secondary education is consistent with a liberal arts model for teacher education, with a strong background in general education, an academic major and professional education. (3) The proposed minor in secondary education would help with recruitment. Eighteen year olds understand the concept of a minor in secondary education rather than teacher certification. (4) The proposed minor would be on the secondary teacher education students' transcript and this would help with the student's marketability.
