1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #11 APC DOCUMENT #14 REVISION IN LITERATURE PROGRAM In the spring of 1982 the APC and Senate formally approved a change in the Literature Department requirements which included dropping the current Senior Paper (Lit 496) and replacing it with a Senior Seminar (Lit 495). This revision was passed too late for the 1982-83 catalog. The course description is as follows: 495 Senior Seminar (3) A synthesizing and unifyng course devoted to important issues of literary philosophy, criticism, and history; to be taken in the same semester as the Senior Compre- hensive Examinations; Senior Paper written as part of the requirements. For advanced students only. After further reflection, the department would like to request a change before the course description appears in the 1983-1984 catalog. (1) Strike the phrases, "to be taken in the same semester as the Senior Comprehensive Examinations" and the phrase, "for advanced students only." Rationale: We believe that requiring students to participate in a senior level seminar, write a major senior paper, and study for comprehensive exams--all in the same semester--may overburden the student. By offering the exams in the fall semester and the seminar in the spring, we hope to enable the student to perform better in both. (2) Prerequisite: "Senior status in the major or permission of the Department Chairman." Rationale: We want to ensure that students are fully prepared for the course and have completed most of their other Literature requirements; we also want the opportunity to perform our own pre-graduating check at this time.
