Popular Music (3) Jazz: History & Analysis (3) - to - 354 Jazz & American Popular Music (3) A study of the development and evolution of all styles of Jazz and pop music within the framework of their respective cultural milieu. RATIONALE: Whereas these courses were originally designed as electives for non majors, they are now needed as upper division electives for majors. (Content being revised accordingly). II. CHANGE: 251 Music History & Appreciation I (3) to 251 Ethnomusicology (3). A scholarly study of the music of non-western societies, prehistoric, preliterate, ancient, and contemporary. CHANGE: 252 Music History & Appreciation II to simply Music History & Appreciation Eliminate "No prerequisites" and add "Not for music majors." RATIONALE: The music student, as any other student at UNCA, (by Dr. must learn to approach his discipline with Edwinn) rigorous scholarship. As most music study is involved in the performance and creation of music, musicology, taken from the German word and concept Musicwissenshaft, provides this approach. As it is generally quite foreign to the college students' musical experience, the study of the music of ancient and non-western societies, which for us the Ethnomusicology makes an excellent introduction to the subject. MUSIC PROPOSAL FOR CATALOG ADDITIONS MUSC 122 JAZZ BAND (1) Performance course encompassing Jazz idioms. Open to all students by audition and director's permission. May be repeated for credit. MUSC 123 ENSEMBLE (1) Course designed to meet specific needs each semester. Possible participation in all types of trios, quartets, quintets, etc., classical or popular styles. Open to all students by audition and permission of instructor. May be repeated for credit. MUSC 124 SYMPHONY (1) Performance of classical repertoire with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. By audition only and permission of the conductor. May be repeated for credit. Note: The courses Music 111, 121, 122, 123, 124 may be repeated for credit, but no more than 8 hours in aggregate may count toward graduation requirements. THE FOLLOWING COURSES WILL BE OFFERED ON A ROTATIONAL BASIS MUSC 355 SYMPHONIC & CHAMBER MUSIC LITERATURE (3) An explorative study and analysis of the symphonic and chamber music literature of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Course includes listening, concert attendance, readings, and lectures. No prerequisites. MUSC 356 OPERA & ORATORIO LITERATURE (3) An introduction to opera, the lyric theatre, and Oratorio through listening, readings, lectures, and appropriate concert attendance. No prerequisites. Page 3 MUSC 363 JAZZ IMPROVISATION (3) Discussion, illustration, and performance of various instrumental and vocal techniques and approaches to improvisation used in the various styles of Jazz including Blues, Latin/Jazz and Jazz Rock. Prerequisite - Music 232 or permission of instructor. MUSC 381 MUSIC INDUSTRY & BUSINESS I (3) A survey of all areas of the music industry: wholesaling, retailing, radio, television, journalism, recording, publishing, manufacturing; including current trends and inter-relationships, etc. MUSC 382 MUSIC INDUSTRY & BUSINESS II (3) A study of specific aspects of the business of music: production, marketing, copyright, contracts, trade association, unions, agents, contractors, taxation, licensing, etc. Prerequisite - Music 381. MUSC 431 ORCHESTRATION (3) A systematic study and application of the technique for utilizing the capabilities of orchestral and band instruments in music composition. Prerequisites - Musc 332. MUSC 432 COMPOSITION (3) Creative writing and original compositions in various forms and for varied media. Prerequisite - Musc 332. MUSC 463 CONDUCTING (2) Emphasizes basic through refined conducting skills and their applicability to various styles of music. Prerequisite - Musc 232. MUSC 480 STUDIO MUSICIANSHIP I (3) Performance oriented course including songwriting, arranging, and production techniques. Prerequisite - Musc 232. MUSC 481 STUDIO MUSCIANSHIP II (3) Production oriented course including acoustics, electronics, studio construction and layout, equipment production procedures, dubbing, mixing, and editing. Prerequisite - Musc 232 & 480. Page 4 MUSC 490 INTERNSHIP (6) Eight to sixteen week internship with a participating firm or organization relevant to the student's degree option, e.g., radio, television, recording studio, etc. Specific information available from department chairman.
