1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #6 APC DOCUMENT #7 CATALOG REVISIONS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS Proposed catalog changes under Department of Physics. Drop the following course from the catalog: 330 Experimental Physics (4) Selected experiments in various areas of physics, introducing the student to experimental design and analysis of data. Prerequisite: Phys 323 or 325. And add in its place: 331 Experimental Physics I (2) Selected experiments with emphasis in nuclear physics, introducing the student to experimental design and analysis of data. Corequisite: Phys 323 or 325. 332 Experimental Physics II (2) Selected experiments with emphasis in physical optics, introducing the students to experimental design and analysis of data. Corequisite: Phys 323 or 325. Rationale: Four hours of laboratory in one semester is not practical as the necessary laboratory hours the student must put in for this much credit interferes with studies in other physics and mathematics courses. In short, a two hour experimental course is just right for an upper-level course in physics which is predominantly laboratory. The two experimental courses will solve the above problem, permit scheduling flexibility, and accommodate transfer students very well as we plan to offer one lab course in the Fall and one in the Spring. Page 2 This change will imply the following editorial changes. On page 141 under Program A (B.A. Degree), change 330 in the required courses in the major to 331, 332. On page 141 under Program B (B.A. Degree), make this same change. On page 142 under B.S. Degree, make this same change.
