1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #5 APC DOCUMENT #6 CATALOG REVISIONS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS Proposed addition of course and change in the credit hours for Physics 101 in the catalogue as described below. 102 The Physics of Sound and Music (3) A course for the general student covering the principles of sound with applications in the areas of music, perception, audiology, and electronic sound production. Change Phys 101 "Light, Photography, Perception, and Visual Phenomena" from two hours to three hours. Rationale: 1. The Physics of Sound and Music has been offered twice during the past year, each time drawing about 30 students. 2. One of the new degree programs in music requires this course and Dr. Joyce Dorr of the Music Department has requested that we add this course to our listing. The Department has experimented with the liberal arts sound and light courses both as two hours courses and three hour courses. The results of these trials has convinced us that these courses are best suited in the Tuesday-Thursday time slots of two 75 minute periods; therefore, making them three hour courses. This is due to the fact that considerable amount of demonstrations, slide projectors, etc. are needed during the class and a 75 minute period gives ample time for both lecture and demonstrations. One hour periods are simply too short.
