1982-1983 SENATE DOCUMENT #3 APC DOCUMENT #3 PROPOSED STATEMENT ON UNIVERSITY POLICY The Academic Policies Committee requests that the Faculty Senate approve the following statement as a matter of University policy: All changes in the text of the Catalog affecting the Academic Program and Regulations of the University require faculty supervision. At the same time, this suprvision ought to be appropriate to the seriousness of the matter at hand. Towards this end, the Editor of the Catalog will consult regularly with the Academic Policies Committee of the Faculty Senate on changes he receives from UNCA faculty and departments. Changes, judged to be major by the Academic Policies Committee (which shall always include changes in program requirements, academic standards, and the addition or deletion of courses), shall be passed on to the Faculty Senate for approval. The Editor will make and maintain a record of minor changes which will be available for faculty inspection. While the Faculty Senate delegates to the Academic Policies committee authority to disallow minor changes, it retains for itself in all matters the final authority it exercises under its Constitution. Rationale: The Editor of the Catalog requested some statement regarding the extent of his powers. Discussion revealed that it was impractical to treat all matters as full APC and Senate Documents and yet substantive academic judgments are involved in the process of editing the Catalog. This statement represents a compromise between delegating this authority to the Editor of the Catlog (it really is a faculty responsibility) and leaving it in the Senate (where it would occupy many faculty members with the truly insignificant).
