1981-1982 Senate Document #50 APC Document #43 Curriculum Changes for Atmospheric Sciences 1. Major requirement: delete AtmSci 105 Introduction to Meteorology and AtmSci 115 (Introduction to) Climatology as required courses in the Climatology option. Rationale: To lower total credit hour requirements for this option; one new upper level course will be required instead; these courses will still be recommended but are not essential for this option. 2. Major requirement: Add AtmSci 340 General Climatology as a required course for the Climatology option. Rationale: New course to be described below. 3. Major requirement: In the Climatology option, change the total required hours to 35. Rationale: The result of the above mentioned changes. 4. Major requirement: Delete Atm Sci 115 (Introduction to) Climatology as a required course in the Weather Forecasting option. Rationale: With the proposed addition of a new required course, requiring this course would exceed the 35 hour limit for the major; although still being recommended, this course is not essential to this option. 5. Major requirement: Add AtmSci 205 Weather Analysis as a required course for the Weather Forecasting option. Rationale: New course to be described below. 6. Recommended courses: In the Weather Forecasting option, include in recommended courses "additional courses in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science are recommended." Rationale: Courses in these fields will be of benefit to majors. 7. Title change: Atm Sci 115; old title "Climatology," proposed new title "Introduction to Climatology." Rationale: To better describe this introductory level course and make the title compatible to other first year courses. 8. Prerequisite change: For Atm Sci 210 General Meteorology I, add to prerequisites "or permission of instructor." Rationale: Regarding the requirement of AtmSci 105 Introduction to Meteorology, for students in the Climatology option and those who have had previous training through the National Weather Service or military, this prerequisite will not be necessary. Page 2 9. New Course: AtmSci 205 Weather Analysis (2) Catalog: Basic plotting of the various weather codes, fundamentals of map analysis, basic techniques of weather forecasting. Required course for the Weather Forecasting option. Prerequisites: AtmSci 105 or permission of instructor. Rationale: This course will allow second year students to get right into analyzing weather maps and making forecasts; these techniques can then be refined over the next few years. 10. Prerequisite change: AtmSci 320 Meteorological Instruments, change prerequisites from "AtmSci 105, 210, 211, Math 191" to "Atm Sci 105 or permission of instructor." Rationale: AtmSci 105 or equivalent training will provide a sufficient background for this course. 11. New Course: AtmSci 340 General Climatology (3) Catalog: A technical study of the physical controls of climate and tne applicability of climatology to man's activities. Required course for the Climatology option. Prerequisites: AtmSci 210, 211, Math 191 Rationale: AtmSci 340, 405, and 420 will be a three course sequence that will make up the heart of the Climatology option. AtmSci 340 will act as the introduction to applied climatology. 12. Prerequisite change: AtmSci 405 Meteorological Statistics, and to prerequisites "AtmSci 340 General Climatology." Rationale: See #11. AtmSci 405 will build upon material presented in AtmSci 340. 13. Prerequisite change: AtmSci 410 Synoptic Meteorology I, add to prerequisites "or permission of instructor." Rationale: To allow the non-traditional student to complete major requirements in less than 4 years, they will be allowed to take AtmSci 305 Atmospheric Thermodynamics and Statics and AtmSci 410 concurrently; material covered in AtmSci 210 & 211 General Meteorology I & II should provide a sufficient background to do this. 14. Prerequisite change: AtmSci 420 Applied Climatology, add to prerequisites "AtmSci 340 General Climatology." Rationale: See #12
