1981-1982 Senate Document #47 Executive Committee Document #7 Released Time Released time or the waiver of a part of the responsibility for teaching a full load during the year is made to provide time for the performance of other non-teaching functions of importance to the University. It is in no sense considered as compensation. There are several categories of persons teaching less than a full load. These are describes as follows: A. Department Chairmen. Department Chairmen need time to perform the duties of the chairmanship. The amount will vary with the complexity of the department. B. Contractual Obligations. Certain positions are designed to provide the administrative component along with teaching. This is not really released time, but rather a mixed position. C. Academic Program Development. Time is needed to develop proposed programs, approved programs, and to redesign or improve programs within existing programs. D. Community Services. Time is needed for some of the community directed activities of the University which are not involved directly with academic teaching. E. Faculty Administration. Time is needed to perform the duties that are related to the Faculty Senate or other academic affairs responsibilities. F. Scholarship. Time should be made available for faculty so they may direct their time and efforts towards their own professional development. G. Research. Time should be available for research activity as it is an important part of the educational process at UNCA. Examples for each of the categories are as follows: A. Department Chairman of Biology, Department Chairman of Psychology, Department Chairman of Literature. B. Director of the Computer Center, coaching. C. Atmospheric Science program development, Music program development, Communications program development. D. Liaison with MAHEC, Economic Education, Southern Highlands Research, International Studies. Page 2 E. Chairman of the Faculty Senate, Chairman of the Academic Policies Committee, Chairman of the Planning Council, Chairman of Self Study. F. Paper preparation, intensive study in new area, Ph.D. thesis preparation. G. Establishment of a new research program, maintenance of an existing research program. The Faculty Senate endorses the above seven categories of professional activity for which released time from assigned teaching responsibilities may be granted. The granting of released time should be based on the merits of each situation. As has been the procedure before, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs should give to the Faculty Senate a released time report each semester.
