1981-1982 Senate Document #46 APC Document #40 Proposal for Replacement of F Grade On page 36 of the catalog under the paragraph titled "Quality Points" insert the following just prior to the last sentence: "If a student repeats a course for which he has earned a grade of D or better, the new hours and quality points shall not be used in the calculation of the grade point average nor shall the new hours count toward graduation requirements. If a failed course is repeated, only the new quality points and semester hours credit will be used in the calculation of the grade point average. A student may take advantage of this forgiveness clause up to maximum of 15 semester hours credit. However, the student's permanent record shall be a complete record of all courses attempted and the evaluations received for these attempts." This policy shall take effect with courses taken beginning with the Fall semester 1982-83. This policy applies both to course credits transferred from other institutions and to course credits earned at UNC-Asheville. RATIONALE: The committee believes that the permanent record must always be a complete history of the student's work, and no part of the record should ever be erased. The proposed motion contains two other aspects. These are aimed at stopping a current practice of repeating courses passed for the purpose of improving the grade point average. It is true that a student can get so far behind from failure that it is virtually impossible to achieve a 2.00 point GPA, but we would rather see him attempt to bring his average up by retaking courses failed. If there are educational reasons for repeating courses previously passed, that is permitted but will not affect the GPA or graduation requirements.
