1981-1982 Senate Document #37 APC Document #31 Oxford '82 Summer Program Requested approval from the Faculty Senate to offer the following courses in our summer at Oxford Program in the Summer of 1982: Literature 373.1: Shakespeare (3 s.h.) A general study of the historical background and major critical works on Shakespeare with particular emphasis on the plays to be performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at nearby Stratford-on-Avon. Students enrolled in the course will attend performances at Stratford-on-Avon as well as visit Shakespeare's birthplace and Anne Hathaway's cottage. In addition, they may enjoy the various Shakespearian performances presented in the gardens of Oxford colleges. Art 373.1: Art Treasures of Oxford (3 s.h.) A straightforward account of the art and techniques of European art from c.1300 to c.1900 with the emphasis on the works of art which are at hand and can be studied in Oxford; not a conventional history but a selective survey of some of the major events and styles seen through the material in local collections. Political Science/Economics 373.1: Contemporary Britain: Politics and Economics This course will consider the present state of Britain, particularly the problematic relationship with Europe, the effects of its postwar political economic policy, and the effects of its membership in the European economic community. Political Science/History 373.2: Britain and World War II This course will focus upon the causes of World War II and the nature and consequences of Britain's involvement in it. The policies of Winston Churchill and his government, the grand strategies of the combatants, and the immediate and long-term consequences of the war to Britain will be examined in detail. Students in this class may visit war museums and other significant sites concerning British participation in the war. We have received approval from the chairmen of all the departments affected to have the courses offered for academic credit.
