1981-1982 Senate Document #32 APC Document #29 Unclassified Students 1. Beginning Freshman (p. 16) Add: The following paragraph on Early Admission at the and of the section. Delete: Same paragraph from Unclassified Students subsection (p. 19) High school juniors may apply for early admission to the University, in lieu of their senior year in high school. Such applicants must, in addition to the usual requirements for beginning freshmen, submit a written recommendation from the secondary school principal or counselor and have a personal interview with a representative of the Office of Admissions. The University's primary concern is that these applicants receive the secondary school diploma after successfully completing the freshman year of college. Rationale: Considering early admit students as unclassified students excludes those students from receiving financial aid or academic advising. These students normally meet all admissions requirements and enroll in a typical freshman program. Changing the classification to the Beginning Freshman category would insure that such students receive close academic advising and be eligible for any financial assistance. 2. Unclassified Students (p. 19) Delete: Unclassified Students may take up to four courses each semester for credit. Add: Unclassified Students may take up to eight credit hours each semester. Persons who wish to take college courses but have no intention of obtaining a degree may be admitted to the University as Unclassified Students. Unclassified Students may take up to eight (8) credit hours each semester. The usual University admissions requirements are waived for students in this classification and no application processing fee is required. Admission as an unclassified students does not of itself constitute regular admission to the University. Unclassified students who take course work for credit must, before successfully completing 25 semester hours of course work, apply to the Admissions Office for admission to the University as a regular degree candidate on the basis of their academic accomplishments. The University's regular rules of scholarship apply to unclassified students. Page 2 Unclassified students who wish to audit specific courses may do so by paying the regular fees at the published time for course registration. Auditing students do not receive grades or credit, and instructors decide on the extent to which they may participate in classes, beyond their presence in the classroom. Rationale: The number of individuals taking 12 or more hours as unclassified students has been steadily increasing. Often these students are pursuing a degree but for various reasons did not submit the necessary credentials to be admitted as degree seeking students. The category was designed for the person interested in a particular course but not desiring a degree. The above changes would not effect the bulk of the unclassified students. Effective Fall '82 3. Editorial Change All application fees should be changed from $10 to $15. This fee change results from action by the UNC Board of Governors and is current policy.
