Senate Document #20 APC Document #18 Department of Art/Music - New Courses PROPOSAL No. 1: p. 57 The addition of the following courses to the new catalog: Art 451 - Creative Art Methods in the Elementary School. (3) Art appreciation for art majors. Theory, materials, laboratory, and a study of the philosophies of art education. Lectures, demonstrations, and studio. Course provides for classroom work in schools and direct observation. RATIONALE: This course was approved for the 1981 catalog by APC, but due to some error, was omitted. The course is required for K-12 certification by art majors. (As of the re-accreditation boards recommendation in the spring of '81.) PROPOSAL No. 2: P. 56 The addition of the following courses to the new catalog: ART 205 - Calligraphy I (3) The study and acquisition of a modern version of 16th Century italic script, both formal and cursive writing. Historical examples heavily drawn upon for understanding and establishment of a solid foundation of the fundamentals. Various natural tools made and utilized. ART 206 - Commercial Art I (3) Studio application of beginning procedures and techniques of commercial art, layout, lettering, design and introduction to reproduction methods. ART 225 - Photography I (3) An introduction to the basics of black and white photography, the camera, exposure and lens function. Includes the development and the enlarging processes. Student must furnish his own camera. (35 mm or 2 1/4) Approximate cost $50. ART 245 - Bronze Casting I (3) An introduction to the Foundry Process. Involves wax work, construction of shells, all casting procedures and finishing techniques. Page 2 RATIONALE: These courses have been offered as special topics on a regular basis since we moved into the new art building (which allowed space for a darkroom and bronze foundry). Three of the four courses have good enrollments, although because of expense, bronze casting has a low enrollment. PROPOSAL No. 3: p. 118-119 Add the following four courses: Music 165 - Beginning Class Guitar Music 265 - Intermediate Class Guitar Music 166; 266 - Class Voice I, II Catalog Statement: 1. Music 165 - Beginning Class Guitar (2) Group and individualized instruction in techniques of guitar performance, classical and popular. Lecture, demonstration, and laboratory. 2. Music 166 - Intermediate Class Guitar (2) Continuation of Music 165, with emphasis on more advanced technique and guitar literature. Prerequisite: Music 165 or equivalent. 3. Music 167; 168 - Class Voice I, II (2) A study of elementary voice production including respiration, articulation, voice placement and Freshman level repertoire. RATIONALE: Both Class Guitar and Class Voice have been successfully offered as Special Topics courses; enrollments and requests warrant their inclusion as regular elective courses.
