1981-1982 Senate Document #15 APC Document #11 Biology Department - Changes in Correlate Course Requirements For the Department of Biology, I request approval to add two courses to the list of correlate courses required for the major in Biology (page 61, Catalog). These are Math 181, College Algebra (3) and Math 182, Trigonometry (3). Their inclusion will bring to 22 or 23 hours (depending on which Computer Science course is chosen by the student) the total for required courses outside the major. This is within the allowable number for correlate courses. Rationale: The departmental staff feels that a natural science student's need for mathematics goes beyond that presently required for the major, namely one statistics course and a computer programming course. Students have been advised to take the two courses noted above, but a few have avoided doing so. Requiring the courses strengthens the biology major, brings it into line with biology programs at other institutions (some require mathematics through calculus), and gives further basic preparation for correlate courses in chemistry and for research in biology. Modified Catalog statement, page 61: II. Required courses outside the major: Chemistry 141, 142, 231; Mathematics 181, 182, and 125 or Psychology 100, 202; Computer Science 120 or 141. Effective Date: Fall, 1982
