1981-1982 Senate Document #14 APC Document #10 Management Department - Miscellaneous Changes I. On page 111 Management 415 Auditing Add: Prerequisite: Math 125 Rationale: Auditing is based on statistical sampling II. On page 112 Management 480 It is proposed that the prerequisites of Mgmt 480 be changed to add Mgmt 315 and Mgmt 316 or Econ 306. Rationale: The usual Accounting I and Accounting II do not adequately cover analysis of financial decision making. In the past, these courses at UNCA have been altered to emphasize the background needed in Mgmt 480 with varying results depending on the instructor and the general academic ability of the class. Now that a full accounting degree is emerging, it is necessary to teach a typical Accounting I and II in order to balance the sequence of I and II with Intermediate I and II requirements for continuing students and transfers. It is anticipated that very few students in the accounting track will enroll in Mgmt 480 since it is not required in the Management core. Very few students in the management tracks will enroll in Intermediate Accounting which would require 6 hours. The majority of the management students would enroll in Econ 306. That number is estimated at approximately 50 students in the academic year 1982-83 and would require at least one night class per year. Page 112, lines 36, 37, and 38 (Prerequisites for Mgmt 480) Delete: Prerequisites: Mgmt 140, 200, 216, 313, 380, and at least five additional credits in Management courses. Add: Prerequisites: Mgmt 140, 200, 216, 316 or Econ 306, Mgmt 313, 380, and at least five additional credits in Management. III. On page 112 Add the following course Management 440 Accounting Systems and Controls (3) Techniques of analyzing the information requirements of an Page 2 organization and translating those needs into an integrated system for decision making and control. Prerequisite: Mgmt 316. Rationale: From the first we have been acutely aware of the need for the study of information systems for accounting majors. Such a course will aid the student in either the design or auditing of an integrated accounting system. The original computer science elective used in the accounting track was intended to accomplish the objectives of Mgmt 440. It didn't work out. There is only so much that can be covered in a course. As compensation CpSc 141 is now a core requirement and Mgmt 415 Auditing is a track requirement. IV. On Page 112 The following changes: Course: Management 490 Professional and Technical Internship where description now reads: "... a 12-week internship with a participating business or social service institution in the Asheville area" will be changed to read: "...a semester long internship with a participating host organization in the Western Carolina area" Rationale: By specifically stating 12 week the program is locked into a rigid time frame, some internships are more intense than others. We are finding that the host organizations are much more varied than just "business or social service institution." Equally, to restrict the internship to the Asheville area ignores the increasing geographical diversity of our student body. V. On page 109 The following addition: Management 365 - Arts Management (3) A seminar designed to explore the characteristics, trends, and management problems of the principal contemporary artistic disciplines. The major areas of concern to professional arts administrators, including planning and program development, artist relations, the legal framework, marketing and public relations, and development, will be discussed. Rationale: Arts organizations, in the United States, have traditionally suffered from poor management. Now that government funding has been reduced and inflation has been decreasing the real value of budgets, arts organizations are more than ever in need of well-trained managers who have a broad knowledge of the particular issues with which arts Page 3 organizations must deal. This course is designed so that students who are artists or students who are in the management program may gain the sensitivity and knowledge needed to respond effectively to the needs of such organizations. This course is being taught for the first time this term, as a special topics course. Several students are currently working in arts organizations, several are management majors and several are from the various fine arts departments in the University. It is anticipated that this course will be taught no more than once a year. VI. Management 304 - page 109 Delete: "Prerequisite: Mgmt 200" Add: "Prerequisite: Mgmt 200 or permission of the instructor." Rationale: Several faculty from other departments have asked if Public Administration could be made more accessible to their students. VII. 1981-1982 catalog reads: Health Care Administration Track: 24 semester hours of courses approved by the major department chairman from Management 320, 321, 330, 421, 422; Psychology 100, 212, 225. (Students exempted form Management 490 must select Management 321 and either 420 or 421). Proposed: Health Care Administration Track: 24 semester hours of courses approved by the major department chairman from Management 320, 321, 330, 420, 421, 422; Psychology 100, 212, 225; Sociology 362; Special Topics approved by major department chairman. (Students exempted from Management 400 must select Management 321 and either 420 or 421). Rationale: Asheville is the medical center of Western North Carolina. The average age of residents of Western North Carolina is higher than the rest of the state primarily due to the large number of retirees. Gerontology in the biological, psychological and sociological disciplines is therefore of greater importance in Western North Carolina health care. Additionally the emergent conceptualization of health care as a right is a critical factor in the organization and management of health care systems.
