1981-1982 Senate Document #13 APC Document #9 Student Academic Grievances Policy ADD to the Catalog statement on p. 39 at end of the section on "Student Responsibilities:" Student Academic Grievances A student grievance procedure exists to serve all enrolled students of this University in the event that they judge they have been improperly or unfairly treated in academic matters. The detailed procedure may be found in the Student Handbook. It should be noted that notice of a grievance must be filed with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs within 15 class days of the incident in question, or within 15 class days of the student's knowledge of the incident. RATIONALE 1. Presently the student academic grievance process is not spelled out in any publication and is practically unknown to students. 2. Students express reluctance to follow the procedure since they do not feel that they will get a fair hearing from either the instructor or the chairman. 3. Too often student complaints go directly to the Office of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, or occasionally to the Chancellor. When these are then forwarded to the chairman, it is often felt that the administrators are siding with the student. 4. Faculty members who have been involved in incidents of alleged cheating have expressed the desire for a hearing body that can render an objective assessment of the situation. 5. The proposed policy attempts to address each of these concerns.
