1981-1982 Senate Document #11 APC Document #7 Addition of a course to Sociology Program, Sociology 235 Add: SOCIOLOGY 235 - RETIREMENT PLANNING AND LIVING (2) An examination of social forces involved in retirement. The course is designed to help maximize the potentials and minimize the problems encountered during the retirement process. Rationale: Retirement Planning and Living is within the tradition of the Marriage and Family course taught in most departments in the field. These family courses draw upon empirical work from Sociology and other disciplines to help the traditional student meet the challenges of a portion of the life cycle which they are starting to experience. The proposed course is designed in similar fashion. It focuses on a later portion of the life cycle. Its enrollment will not come from the traditional students but the older adults in the community. The offering and the audience it serves is well within the university's mission. "The fundamental mission of the University . . . is to provide an education of high quality for individuals at all stages of their lives as they seek to acquire knowledge, develop skills, and prepare themselves to pursue their personal and professional goals."
