1981-1982 Senate Document #4 APC Document #2 Physics Curriculum Revision APC recommends approval of the following catalog revisions concerning Physics offerings: I) Delete: Phys 105 The World of Integrated Circuits (2) A course for the general student in integrated circuits, including microcomputers, robots, speech and music synthesizers, and interfacing with scientific experiments. Rationale: This material is adequately covered in Physics 240 Digital Electronics and Integrated Circuits and the Microcomputer Course Sequence (see CSCI 248 Microcomputers I and CSCI 249 Microcomputers II). The general student can take the special topics course: The Physics of Sound for an introduction to electronics, integrated circuits, speech, and music synthesizers. The sound course (being offered this Fall for the first time) is being developed in conjunction with Director McCormack and Dr. Joyce Dorr so that it can complement the Musical Instrument Manufacture Program with NCSU. II) Add Phys 105 Contemporary Physics (4) A survey course with laboratory covering the fundamentals of mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, atomic and nuclear physics, and their application in today's society. Rationale: This is the required course for students in the Western Carolina University nursing program (refer to the WCU catalogue). Since UNA has a two-plus-two program agreement with WCU, we are committed to offer, for students in this program, the proper course that adequately meets their needs. This type of survey course in physics has also been suggested by Dr. Bob Williams of the Management Department and Dr. Gwen Henderson of the Education Department for UNCA students. III) Minor Alterations 1) On p. 44 the incorrect titles appear for Physics 111/112 and Physics 221/222. The correct titles are 111 Introductory Physics I 112 Introductory Physics II Page 2 221 Physics I 222 Physics II 2) On p. 125 The phase "basic topics" in the course description for Physics 101 ("Light, Photography ...") should read "basic optics." 3) On p. 125 remove the Chemistry 141 requirement from Physics 221 (Physics I) and add it to Physics 324 (Modern Physics) on p. 126.
