Senate Document #1 EC Document #1 1981-1982 Resolution on Faculty Senate Responsibilities Whereas the Faculty Senate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville is a deliberative body consisting of sixteen faculty members, who are elected by their peers, and the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, who serve as ex officio members; Whereas the Faculty Senate is charged with responsibility for developing, maintaining, evaluating, and revising the academic programs of the institution, subject to the Chancellor's final authority over policies and procedures of the University; Whereas a university is, first and foremost, a community of scholars; And inasmuch as the vitality and integrity of that community depends upon the extent to which its participants assume responsibility for defining their environment and satisfy their obligation to exhibit a commitment to scholarship and academic excellence; And whereas a university is an evolutionary entity whose development will (1) evolve, at random, without attention to direction or excellence, or (2) be specified by agents outside the collection of principal participants or (3) be directed by the body of participants; Therefore, be it resolved that this Faculty Senate recognizes its priviledge and responsibility of leadership in defining the academic community of the University of North Carolina at Asheville; And be resolved that this Senate will fulfill its responsibility by exhibiting a strong sense of purpose, and understanding of the nature of a teacher's academic obligation and a scholar's intellectual obligation, a thoughtful tolerance for conflicting perspectives, a general commitment to excellence, and a propensity for hard work.
