University of North Carolina at Asheville FACULTY SENATE September 11, 1980 The Faculty Senate met on Thursday, September 11, 1980 at 4:00 pm in RL1 with Dr. Gene Rainey, Chairman, presiding. Members present: Dr. Braggio, Dr. Coyne, Dr. Friedenberg, Dr. Greenawalt, Dr. Howard, Dr. Johnston, Dr. Lang, Dr. McCoy, Dr. Perry, Dr. Rainey, Dr. Reynolds, Dr. Squibb, Dr. Sulock, Dr. Walker. Excused absences: Dr. Boland, Dr. Wilson Visitors: Dr. Seitz, Dr. Stoughton Dr. Rainey introduced the new recording secretary, Mrs. Jan Scroggs. She will be replacing Miss Jackie Peterson, who has done an excellent job for many years. Dr. Rainey called for additions or corrections to the minutes of the May 9 meeting. It was moved and seconded that the minutes be approved as distributed. The motion carried. With the committees being newly formed, there were no committee reports to be given. Dr. Rainey reported that about 50% of the surveys indicating agenda and task force priorities had been returned. One other suggestion had been phoned in to Dr. Rainey. It was the extension of the drop-add period. The 24 topics had been listed by Dr. Rainey in order of priority. He suggested that the Senate focus on the top 12 this semester and the remaining ones the next semester. The first 12 were each discussed in turn, taking those indicating interest in that particular topic as a starting committee, along with any others interested, with a contact person from the Senate. These committees were to take their topic and first of all find a definition of the problem. The purpose was not to get bogged down in a lot of meetings, although some topics would take more investigation than others; but meet to gather say a page of proposals to send to APC. It was decided that Topic #5: Review of All-University requirements, particularly the math requirements; and Topic #17: Examination of the English program with the general education program would be dropped for the time being due to the already intense interest of these subjects by Dr. Dorr. Dr. Sulock suggested, however, that Dr. Dorr receive a list of all those faculty members interested. Dr. Perry reported that Topic #20: Review of the honor's program was already in the process of being reviewed by APC. It was suggested that those faculty interested in this topic be contacted Page 2 and invited to the APC meeting to be held next week so that they might be involved in the discussion of this matter. Dr. Walker was assigned to Topic #21: Lack of campus community feeling. Dr. Braggio offered an interpretation of "campus community feeling." He was asked to submit his ideas to Dr. Walker for inclusion in the discussion by the committee. Dr. McCoy was assigned to Topic #18: Review of the academic calendar (extending the grading period to enable the faculty to deal with the increase in courses). It was decided that Topic #7: Consideration of reinstating a final examination period; Topic #10: Review of early grades for seniors; and the topic concerning the drop-add period should be included with this committee. Dr. McCoy suggested that they also look into the best date for spring break since changing over to a semester basis. Dr. Lang was assigned to Topic #24: Ways to increase experimentation in teaching. Dr. Johnston was assigned to Topic #16: Review of the freshman advising system. It was decided that Topic #19: Guidelines to department chairmen concerning the SACS accreditation should be dropped since it was believed that it would be done anyway. Topic #6: Review of the Developmental Studies Program; and Topic #14: Remedial education review were combined since they were closely related. Dr. Sulock was assigned to this Task Force. Topic #1: Review of transfer policy; and Topic #2: Review of probation and suspension policies was dropped due to the attention already being given them by Dr. Dorr. The first twelve topics being covered, Dr. Rainey announced a vacancy on the Senate due to the resignation of Dr. Walter Boland, who was unable to serve due to the conflict with his position on the City Council. Ballots will be sent out soon to fill this vacancy. A third vacancy situation occurred on the Grievance Committee because two members of the same department were elected to the committee. Because of possible legal problems that might arise, an election should be held. Dr. Gerald Gullickson and Dr. Merritt Moseley were both elected - Gullickson at the full Professor level, and Moseley at the Assistant Professor level. Dr. Moseley will be informed that he cannot serve because of Dr. Gullickson's presence on the committee and a new election will be held for the Assistant Professor level. It was suggested, however, that a new election may not be needed because Dr. Moseley's position was not technically a "vacancy." The meetings for the remainder of the calendar year were set for Page 3 October 16, November 20, and December 11. The meeting adjourned at 5:20 pm.
