1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #24 APC DOCUMENT #24 Policy Concerning Withdrawal The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate adoption of the following policy concerning withdrawal: Catalog, page 56, REPLACE paragraph 3 with the following paragraph (change underlined) When a student withdraws after the drop/add period but before the announced deadline for withdrawal, the grading symbol of W will be recorded for each course. A student who withdraws after the deadline will receive F grades except when extenuating circumstances dictate otherwise. Withdrawal after the deadline with a grade of W may be processed through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs provided the student obtains the written permission of the instructor. The official date of withdrawal to be used for determining grades and tuition refunds is the day on which the student contacts the Office of Academic Advising and Testing and asks to be withdrawn from school. A student who withdraws unofficially will receive F as the final grade in each course and should contact the Office of Academic Advising and Testing before again registering for classes. Catalog, pages 51 and 52, EDIT appropriate paragraphs to reflect this policy. Rationale: The present policy is too rigid. If taken literally it does not cover certain extenuating circumstances (illness or emotional problems, for example) in which withdrawal without academic penalty may be desirable. The proposed policy, by its wording, allows more flexibility. The present policy also may be interpreted in exceptional cases as not requiring the instructor's involvement. The proposed policy specifies that the procedure for withdrawing after the withdrawal date must involve the instructor. Effective Date: Immediately (Passed by Faculty Senate 2/12/81)
