1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #22 APC DOCUMENT #22 Courses to be offered in the Oxford Summer Program The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate approval of the following four courses to be offered in the Oxford summer program: *Political Science/Economics 373.1 (3 cr. hr.) Dr. Dodd Britain and the European Economic Community This course will survey the origins of the European Economic Community, the institutions and decision-making processes of the organization, the major issues confronting the EEC, such as enlargement and the Common Agricultural Policy, and the external policies of the EEC, particularly its relationship to the United States and to the developing world. Dr. Holmes Britain and World War II This course will focus upon the causes of World War II and the nature and consequences of Britain's involvement in it. The policies of Winston Churchill and his Government, the grand strategies of the combatants, and the immediate and long-term consequences of the war to Britain will be examined in detail. Dr. Bradbury The Modern British Novel 1850-1980 This course will examine the novels of a representative group of writers ranging from Charles Dickens to Iris Murdoch. The novels chosen for study will illustrate the development in form and technique in the genre over the period, focusing particularly on the theme of developing consciousness. Mr. Warburton Shakespeare A general study of the historical background and major critical works on Shakespeare with particular emphasis on the plays to be performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at nearby Stratford-on-Avon. Students enrolled in the course will attend performances at Stratford-on-Avon as well as visit Shakespeare's birthplace and Anne Hathaway's cottage. In addition, they may enjoy the various Shakespearian performances presented in the gardens of Oxford colleges. Anthony Warburton, Instructor.
