1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #21 APC DOCUMENT #21 Changes in the Department of History The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate approval of the following changes in major and certification requirements for the Department of History: CHANGES IN MAJOR The following changes to the requirements for a history major are requested. DELETE: Program A - Traditional History I. Required courses in the major: 30 hours, including 201, 202, 450, and seven additional... ADD: Program A - Traditional History I. Required courses in the major: 36 hours, including 201, 202, 251, 252, 450, and seven additional... DELETE: Program B - Public History I. Required courses in the major: 36 hours, including 201, 202, 300, 390 and seven additional three semester hour courses chosen so as to avoid undue concentration in the general area of European or American history. ADD: Program B - Public History I. Required courses in the major: 36 hours, including 201, 202, 251, 252, 300, 390, and five additional three semester hour courses chosen to emphasize American history. DELETE: Program C - Social Studies Certification I. Required courses in the major: 30 hours, including 201, 202, 315, 365, 381, 450, and twelve additional hours chosen from offerings in European and Russian history, Asia and the Pacific World, Africa, and Latin America. ADD: Program C - Social Studies Certification I. Required courses in the major: 36 hours, including 201, 202, 251, 252, 315, 450, and seven additional three semester hour courses chosen to emphasize European and Russian history, Asia and the Pacific World, Africa, and Latin America. Rationale: The changes incorporate the addition of 251, 252 into major requirements. Page 2 CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT CHANGES The following changes to the Secondary Certification in Social Studies (p. 112, current catalog) are requested. DELETE: (B) Complete 15 semester hours in history if not a history major (in addition to the Humanities sequence). The Department of History will specify the specific history courses required for North Carolina certification in social studies (see page 124). ADD: (b) Complete: History 201 - U.S. to 1861 History 202 - U.S. Since 1861 History 315 - N.C. History History 251 - World Civilization to 1687 History 252 - World Civilization Since 1687 Rationale: Incorporates History 251, 252 into certification requirements. Effective date: Fall, 1981.
