1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #20 APC DOCUMENT #20 Changes in the Department of Education The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate approval of the following two course number and course description additions for the Department of Education: I. Brief description of proposal. The Department of Education proposes that: Student Teaching in Art (K-12) and Student Teaching in Theatre Arts (K-12) have a different course number and a different course description from the present course number and description of Ed. 460, Student Teaching and Seminar in the Secondary School that appears in the current catalog. II. Background. Presently: (1) The Department of Education offers the following four (4) courses in different levels and/or areas of Student Teaching: Ed 450 - Student Teaching and Seminar, K-3 Ed 451 - Student Teaching and Seminar, 4-9 Ed 452 - Student Teaching and Seminar, K-12 Reading Ed 460 - Student Teaching and Seminar, Secondary (7-12) (2) Students who wish to be certified in Art and Theatre Arts take Ed 460 - Student Teaching in the Secondary School because they plan to teach in the secondary rather than elementary schools. This may be because teacher certification in Art and Theatre Arts at UNCA has been oriented more toward secondary rather than elementary certification. III. Rationale for change. During the 1979 State Visitation Committee to evaluate UNCA's Teacher Education program, it was pointed out that since the state guidelines for Teacher Education delineate that Art and Theatre Arts are "special" teaching areas, students should be certified in K-12 rather than just secondary. The recommendation was made that UNCA make appropriate changes to satisfy the state guidelines for certification in Art and Theatre Arts. IV. Proposed changes. The Department of Education at UNC-Asheville wishes to respond to this recommendation by adding the following two new course numbers and two new course descriptions. Page 2 (1) Add (after Ed. 452): Ed. 453 - Student Teaching and Seminar in Art K-12 (will follow Secondary Professional Block). (6) (2) ADD Course Descriptions: Ed 453 - Student will work in Art with pupils at both the elementary and secondary levels. Open only to students seeking Art certification K-12. Prerequisites: Art 451 and all required secondary education courses except 360 and 480 and all Psychology requirements for secondary certification.
