1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #18 APC DOCUMENT #18 Policy on Post Baccalaureate Study The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate approval of the following policy on Post Baccalaureate Study: p. 66 A Second Baccalaureate Degree 1. Delete entire section. 2. Replace with the following: Post-Baccalaureate Study Persons who hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution have two options for further credentials from UNCA. 1. Second Baccalaureate Degree This student is considered a transfer student and must meet all the conditions of transfer students, with the additional stipulation that at least 2/3 of the courses required in the major department must be taken in residence. Approval of the proposed program must be given by the department chairman. A bachelor's degree is awarded. 2. Post Baccalaureate Major The University grants a certificate of "Post-Baccalaureate Major" to persons who have already received a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution. The certificate is awarded for work done in a major program different from that for which the baccalaureate degree was awarded. Students enrolling for this certificate must complete all the requirements for a major at UNCA, including prerequisites, correlate courses and a foreign language (if a specific language is required for the major.) Normally, a minimum of 30 semester hours is required for this certificate. Approval of the proposed program must be given by the department chairman. Rationale Some few students for job purposes appear to need a full-fledged degree. Consequently the option for a Second Baccalaureate is retained. Most students do not need or want all the courses included in the above option, since they already have general education and electives. They just want another area of expertise, i.e. another major. p. 36 Post Baccalaureate Students (Begins on p. 35) Page 2 1. Add to end of this section Baccalaureate degree holders who wish to meet the requirements for a post baccalaureate major should submit an appliction fee of $10 and official transcripts of all previous college attendance. Rationale: This brings the section on Requirements and Procedures into conformity with the newly-proposed post baccalaureate major. Effective Date: Fall, 1981 (Passed by Faculty Senate 10/23/80)
