1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #8 APC DOCUMENT #8 Probation Policy The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate adoption of the following probation policy: p. 53 Academic Eligibility 1. Delete "A student whose grade point average..." to end of Academic Eligibility Section. 2. New version of deleted material (substantive changes underlined) A student whose grade point average at the end of any semester is below the minimum will be placed on academic probation for the next twelve semester hours of work. If, at the end of that period, the average is still below the minimum, the student will be placed on terminal probation for an additional 12 hours of work. If the necessary grade point average has not been attained by the end of terminal probation, dismissal from the University will result. No student, however, will be placed on terminal probation or dismissed if he or she has earned at least a 2.2 grade point average on a minimum of 12 semester hours of probation. A student on probation is limited to enrolling for a maximum of 12 semester hours of credit during that semester. A grade point average of 2.0 on work completed at UNCA since the beginning of the Fall semester 1978 is required for graduation. Work completed prior to Fall 1978 is not computed in the grade point average. Probation regulations apply to all classifications of students. Note: (not for catalog) At the end of Spring '81 there would be no suspensions. Those persons eligible for suspension will instead begin their terminal probation of 12 semester hours. These hours can begin during summer school. Rationale: Suspension is eliminated as not clearly conductive to academic progress. In its place one additional probation is considered. Since so many students enroll part time, the probationary period is defined as 12 semester hours of work. This method eliminates the problem of enrollments in the summer. Finally, as long as a student on probation maintains a 2.2 average, this is seen as improvement and progress, thereby forestalling the need for a terminal probation or dismissal (even though the total GPA has not reached the desired minimum.) Effective date: Day of posting of grades, May, 1981. (Passed by Faculty Senate 10/16/80)
