1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #5 APC DOCUMENT #5 Catalog Changes in the Department of Chemistry The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate adoption of the following catalog changes for the Department of Chemistry: 1. DROP: Certain requirements for B.S. degree: Chem 233, 234, 331 or 341, 332 or 443 ADD: Certain requirements for B.S. degree: Chem 223, 224, 321, 421, and two courses chosen from Chem 322, 323, and 422. 2. DROP: Certain requirements for B.A. degree: Chem 233, 234, 331, 332, and nine additional semester hours credit ADD: Certain requirements for B.A. degree: Chem 223, 224, 321, 323, and twelve additional semester hours credit 3. DROP: Certain requirements for B.S. degree with Clinical Chemistry Concentration: Chem 233, 234, 341, 342, 332; Math 201 ADD: Certain requirements for B.S. degree with Clinical Chemistry Concentration: Chem 223, 224, 321, 323, 331, 411, 442 4. DROP: 233, 234 Modern Analytical Chemical Concepts (3,3) ADD: 223, 224 Modern Analytical Chemical Concepts (2,2) (course description unchanged) 5. DROP: 332, Mechanistic Organic and Biochemical Concepts (3) ADD: 322 ADVANCED ORGANIC CHEMISTRY (2) Recent developments in organic chemistry. Emphasis on mechanisms, physical-organic chemistry, and synthesis. Prerequisite: Chem 232, 331 (or 341). 323 BIOCHEMISTRY (2) Modern biochemical concepts, including carbohydrates, amino acids, nucleic acids, proteins, metabolism, the chemistry of drugs, etc. Prerequisite: Chem 232. 6. DROP: 331 Modern Inorganic Chemical Concepts (3) 431 Advanced Physical Inorganic Chemical Concepts (3) ADD: 321, 421 MODERN INORGANIC CHEMICAL CONCEPTS (2,2) Introduction to inorganic chemistry with emphasis on the study of selected descriptive chemistry of the elements and their compounds within a modern framework of atomic structure, bonding, stereo- Page 2 chemistry, periodicity, mechanistic concepts and acid-base theories. Prerequisite: Chem 232; Pre- or co-requisite: Chem 331 (or 341). 7. DROP: 443 Polymer Chemistry (4) ADD: 422 POLYMER CHEMISTRY (2) Introduction to the principles of polymer chemistry from a theoretical and descriptive viewpoint. Methods of synthesis and analysis of polymers. Prerequisites: Chem 232, 222, 331 (or 341). 8. DROP: 427, 428 Chemical Research (2,2) ADD: 445 CHEMICAL RESEARCH (4) Directed laboratory research and independent study which may culminate in a research paper for publication. Department Chairman permission required for admission. Pre- or co-requisite: Chem 425. Rationale: These changes bring our program more in accord with the requirements for American Chemical Society accreditation. The total course offerings in the Department are decreased by five semester hours, which will enable us to expend greater effort in managing a heavier student load in the first and second year courses. The total chemistry requirements for each degree are slightly decreased by the proposed changes while giving a better balance among the areas of analytical, organic, and inorganic chemistry. It is hoped these changes will encourage our majors to take a wider variety of courses and increase enrollment in our advanced level courses. (Passed by Faculty Senate 10/16/80)
