1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #3 APC DOCUMENT #3 Catalog Changes in the Department of Economics The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate adoption of the following catalog changes for the Department of Economics: 1. Add: Econ 210: An Introduction to Financial Markets and Institutions Description: Topics include supply and demand of short and long-term sources and uses of funds; and problems financial institutions face coping with a changing economy. Rationale: The financial aspects of economics are becoming increasingly complex, in part, due to the expanding credit needs of businesses, consumers, and governments. Consider, for example the proliferation of the Eurodollar markets, and the development of NOW accounts and money market mutual funds. This course is in response to this complexity and the growing importance of finance in economics. 2. Add: Econ 341: Cost-Benefit Analysis Description: Introduction to techniques for evaluating government projects. Topics include measurement of costs and benefits, and distributional consequences of policy. Interdisciplinary emphasis. Energy and environmental examples. Prerequisite: EC 200 Rationale: This course is in response to the Environmental Studies Program. 3. Change of Course Title: (p. 100) Change from: Econ 215: Introduction to Financial Institutions and Monetary Theory To: Econ 215: Money and Banking Rationale: Given the introduction of Econ 210 the new title reduces confusion and better reflects course content. 4. Change of Course Number: (p. 100) Change from: Econ 235 Economic Statistics and Econometrics To: Econ 365 Economic Statistics and Econometrics Rationale: The number change more accurately reflects the level of abstraction and difficulty of the course. The junior year is when a course of this type is normally taken in most Page 2 undergraduate economics curriculums. Our records indicate students seldom, if ever, take this course before the junior year and in most cases have completed Math 125 and 181 prior to enrollment. 5. Change in program requirements (p. 98) (Pending approval of #1 above) Change the list of required courses for Monetary Economics and Finance From: --"Students in this area take Economics 215, 410, and two from Economics 305, 306, 310, 350. The remaining three hours"-- To: --"Students in this area take Economics 210, 215, 410, and two from Economics 305, 306, 310, 350." Rationale: The introduction of Economics 210 allows a fuller development of this area of study with regard to the finance component and should be required of all students selecting the option. See rationale for adding Economics 210. Effective Date: Fall, 1981 (Passed by Faculty Senate 10/16/80)
