1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #2 APC DOCUMENT #2 Catalog Changes in Art and Music The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate adoption of the following catalog changes for the Department of Art and Music: PROPOSAL #1: To add 6 hours to the 34 required of the present major. This will mean a major will consist of 40 art hours--12 introductory and 28 above the introductory level. Rationale: To provide a better general art foundation a broader base of experience is necessary as provided by the six additional hours we propose, see Proposal #2. 90% of our majors take over 40 hours in art at the present. PROPOSAL #2: To require the major to take 6 additional hours to be selected as follows: 3 hrs from either 220 Printmaking I or 210 Painting I and 3 hrs from either 230 Ceramics I or 240 Sculpture I. These courses will be added to the overall requirement. Rationale: At the present time a student can graduate in art from UNCA without any color or color theory classes or exposure to printmaking. In the last 10 years printmaking has become more and more significant in the art field, and it is important for an art major to be knowledgeable in that area. Ceramics is a significant indigenous craft and yet our students can graduate without kiln knowledge or studio experience in crafts. In our new space we have a printmaking facility as well as new ceramics and sculpture studios, and these programs need to be emphasized. Students should be encouraged to take advantage in these areas. The requirements we propose would help boost these programs and at the same time would provide a better experience for the student. General: Proposals 1 and 2 change the 1980-81 catalog statement (page 79) by adding 6 additional hours to the major and by requiring these 6 hours to be taken as stated in proposal #2. PROPOSAL #3: DELETE: 105 Basic Design Laboratory (1) 106 Inanimate Drawing Laboratory (1) 107 Life Drawing Laboratory (1) 145 Basic 3-Dimensional Design & Sculpture Laboratory (1) (old catalog pages 78 & 80) Page 2 Rationale: These courses were added to the schedule to allow the regular courses (e.g. Basic Design 100) to have 4 hours semester credit, to be divided over two terms, two hours each term, for over-time pay. Extra assignments were given to allow one extra hour credit. Since we have adopted the semester system this method of hours per term, etc. is no longer necessary. These courses also make no sense according to our numbering system. PROPOSAL #4: Add: 410 Painting III (3) Rationale: At the present time there is no senior level painting class. Students must take advanced painting as an individual course. The addition of 410 Painting would prevent so many individual classes and allow a more uniform method of critique and evaluation. PROPOSAL #5: Change: 333 Ceramics II (3) to: 231 Ceramics II (3) Change: 430 Ceramics III (3) to: 330 Ceramics III (3) Add: 430 Ceramics IV (3) Rationale: All of these changes are to improve the sequence of the ceramics courses. For example, old 333 Ceramics II, according to the numbering system of the Art Department, should have 330, 331 and 332 before it (it did not); as changed it is the second course at the sophomore level and 330 Ceramics is the first class of the junior level in Ceramics and in proper sequence. (Catalog pages 80 & 81). PROPOSAL #6: Add: 220 Printmaking I (3) Rationale: There is no present course that allows a sophomore to take printmaking. The addition of 220 Printmaking I will make that possible. This is only the second catalog printing class, all others are S.A.T. PROPOSAL #7: Change: 241 Sculpture II (3) to: 240 Sculpture I (3) Change: 342 Sculpture III (3) to: 340 Sculpture II (3) Change: 361 Weaving II (3) to: Page 3 360 Weaving II (3) (Catalog pages 80 & 81) Rationale: These changes are all in an attempt to make our titles and numbering consistent. PROPOSAL #8: Add 490-492 SENIOR EXHIBITIONS (I-III) (3) Preparation for Senior Exhibitions. Allows a student up to 9 hours credit. Individual studio consultation and exhibition procedures are emphasized. Prerequisite: Advanced courses in area of expertise. Effective Date: Fall, 1981 (Passed by Faculty Senate 10/16/80)
