1980-81 SENATE DOCUMENT #1 APC DOCUMENT #1 Changes in minor requirements for Literature & Language The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate adoption of the following proposal to change major requirements for Literature and Language major, Program B (Journalism): Catalog page affected: 128 (1980-81 edition) Proposed Change: Delete the entire final paragraph of Program B. Add paragraph as follows: Competence on the intermediate level in a classical or modern foreign language is required for the program in Journalism. Rationale: A journalism major--one who proposes to make the use of language his or her career speciality--needs a broad range of experience in language, all languages. The department does not want to turn out students with a sound knowledge of craft but a weak preparation in the traditional disciplines of the liberal arts. Both the editors of the Asheville Citizen, who serve as part-time faculty in the program, and the manager of WLOS-TV, who serves as advisor to the program, have approved of this change. Effective Date: Fall, 1981 Passed by Faculty Senate 10/16/80)
