SENATE DOCUMENT #19 APC Document #15 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate approval of the following catalog changes for the Department of Physics: I. Add: to the first paragraph on p. 138 and on p. 139: Competency in a foreign languge is not required. Students may choose any option available for science majors described in the foreign language policy section of the catalogue. Rationale: This has been the policy of the Department of Physics for years; however, here has failed to be a catalogue statement in reference to this policy. It has been pointed out by the Registrar that this departmental policy should be recorded in the catalogue so that students and advisors will not be confused over this issue. II. Delete: (on page 139) 221 Mechanics (4) An introduction to basic physics for the science student. The course emphasizes vector analysis, Newtonian dynamics, and the concepts of energy and momentum. The laboratory work is coordinated with the class work. Prerequisite: Mathematics 191 or permission of the instructor. 222 Electricity and Magnetism (4) This course continues the work of Physics 221. The student studies electrostatics, direct and alternating current curcuits, and magnetism. The laboratory work stresses the use of electronic equipment. Prerequisite: Physics 221 or permission of the instructor. ADD: 221 Mechanics (4) An introduction to basic physics for the science student. The course covers Newtonian statics and dynamics, fluid dynamics, head and sound. The laboratory work is coordinated with the class work. Prerequisite: Mathematics 191 or permission of the instructor. 222 Electricity and Magnetism (4) A continuation of Physics 221. The course covers electrostatics, circuits, magnetism, light, and introductory modern physics concepts. Prerequisite: Physics 221 or permission of the instructor. Rationale: The Chemistry Department at UNC-A has recommended that we include coverage of heat in Physics 221 so that chemistry majors will be better prepared for upper-level chemistry courses. Furthermore, in a letter to Chancellor Highsmith (May 21, 1979), Dr. L. K. Monteith, Dean of Engineering at North Carolina State University, included a committee report concerning a two-plus-two transfer program from UNC-A to the school of engineering in a variety of areas. A statement in this report read: "The committee believes the physics offerings at UNC-A to be of high quality and to offer a strong foundation for the study of engineering. Three courses, totaling eleven credits, would have to be required, however, to cover the topics treated in Py 205 and 208 at NCSU. While we have no objection to using the existing sequence at UNC-A, we recognize that by doing so we would require a student to earn more credits than needed. Those credits could be transferred as free electives; however, the Provost's Office at NCSU might show concern over such a plan unless nine or more free-elective credits remained. For this reason, we strongly recommend that UNC-A provide an eight-credit physics sequence equivalent to our PY 205, 208." The addition of heat and sound which we have already implemented in Physics 221 will make our course equivalent to PY 205 at State (of course, their committee will have to review the course syllabus for official approval). Also, a slight modification in Physics 222 which the Physics Department had planned to make anyway, anticipating a need to include modern peripheral areas, will make Phys 222 an excellent candidate for a match to PY 208.
