SENATE DOCUMENT #11 APC Document #7 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate the adoption of the following catalog changes for the Department of Classics: pp. 88-89 - DELETE entire statement under "Area I: Preparatory Skills," and replace it with the following: Area I: Preparatory Skills 111 Elementary Greek (3) 112 Elementary Latin (3) The fundamentals of grammar and translation; introduction to elements or classical culture. 221 Intermediate Greek (3) 222 Intermediate Latin (3) Improvement in interpretation and translation; significance of the major authors. Prerequisite: Classics 111 for 221, 112 for 222, or proficiency demonstrated to the satisfaction of the instructor. Rationale: To adapt to the scheduling requirements of the semester system and enable students to complete major requirements within a four-year period. Collateral editorial changes required in the catalog to be consistent with above: 1) Page 68, first paragraph under "Policy on Foreign Languages as a Major Requirement," change "intermediate level" in second sentence to "second-year level"; change "intermediate courses" in third (last) sentence to "appropriate courses"; in last sentence change "Greek 231, 241; Latin 232, 242" to "Greek, two courses at 300 level; Latin, two courses at 300 level." 2) Page 89 under Area II, last sentence, change Classics 241 to 221 and Classics 242 to 222. 3) Page 121, delete "A Joint Major in Literature and Classics" and the following paragraph.
