Senate Document #8 APC Document #4 The Academic Policies Committee recommends to the Faculty Senate the adoption of the following catalog changes for the Developmental Studies Program: Change title of DS 101 from Reading II to Reading Laboratory (pp. 66 and 164). Change title of DS 104 from Arithmetical Concepts & Computations to Basic Mathematics (pp. 66 and 164). Change course description for DS 101 as follows: DELETE final sentence, and ADD in its place: Formal participation in the Reading Laboratory is required of all students enrolled in DS 100. Rationale: 1. The change of title of DS 101 from Reading II to Reading Laboratory will cause the name of the course to conform to the facts of the course. It is possible to take the Reading Lab without taking the Basic Reading course. The current title suggests that Basic Reading and Reading II are a sequence, which they are not. 2. The institution of a statement requiring formal participation in Reading Laboratory of those enrolled in Basic Reading will permit similarity between the Basic Writing Program and the Basic Reading Program in method of operation. Too, the conventional wisdom in developmental education suggests that a reading course with a concurrent lab is an effective combination in teaching reading. 3. The change of title of DS 104 from Arithemtical Concepts and Computations to Basic Mathematics (a) will create symmetry in DS course titles and (b) will give DS 104 a title which students can remember (something they have not been able to do with the current title). (Passed by Faculty Senate 12/12/79).
