Senate Document #4, 1979-80 Charge of The Institutional Development Committee The Institutional Development Committee reports primarily to the Faculty Senate but, because of the language in the Tenure Policies and Regulations, it reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on matters in which the Vice Chancellor acts after consultation with the Committee. The Institutional Development Committee interprets the tenure document as indicating the following areas with which it should be concerned: (a) The candidate review process. (b) The long range implications of the allocations of the institution's resources. (c) The exercise of initiative in selecting topics for consideration that deal with these concerns. The following charge will fulfill the Committee's obligation to both the Senate and the tenure document. 1. The Committee will act as the standing long range planning committee. It will assume primary responsibility for addressing these campus- wide activities. (a) Self-evaluation for purposes of Southern Association Accreditation. (b) The five year plan required by the general administration. (c) Special evaluations or studies that are required of the Institution. These studies will frequently involve specialized expertise and may take more than one year to accomplish. Since the Institutional Development Committee is reformed each year it is expected that it will sometimes be necessary to appoint, with Senate approval, ad hoc committees which will include appropriate expertise and can function for as long as the activity requires. The ad hoc committees will work with, and will report to the Senate through, the current Institutional Development Committee. 2. The Committee will address its obligation to the concern over long range allocation of resources by consulting with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on: (a) Allocation of new faculty positions. (b) Establishment of new administrative positions. 3. The committee will address its obligation to the candidate review process by joining with the Faculty Welfare Committee in interviewing candidates. It will report to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on the potential of the candidate for contributing to overall university community. 4. The Committee will meet its obligations to exercise initiative as follows: When the Committee recognizes an activity which is likely to have an impact on one of the concerns of the committee, it will bring it to the attention of the Senate. Any further action by the Committee will be as directed by the Senate. (Adopted by Faculty Senate, 10/17/79.)
